Planting My Flag: Day 1
It's time to follow my own advice. The first step towards conquering my new world is planting my flag on some new territory and setting out a charter.
The Fruglar's Writing Company begins today. Population: 1. The first order of business is to produce a finished screenplay to hock at the international market place known as the Austin Film Festival. The hard deadline for this endeavor is May 15. Simultaneous to this task, the Company will undertake research on a non-fiction book, towards the goal of completing this book by the end of the year.
Each step towards realizing these goals represents growth of the Company and a gradual taming of the wild and hostile frontier currently surround the tiny slice of land that I'm inserting this flag into.
The conquest of the surrounding territory will commence starting now, powered by consistent adherence to a simple work plan.
The screenplay isn't a from-scratch proposition. The majority of the raw materials came over on the boat, along with the beginnings of a blue print. After a few days of tweaking the blueprint, all that remains to complete the project is labor. A screenplay is measured in scenes. Mine will have approximately 40. At the rate of two scenes per day, the chassis can be completed in 3 weeks. Before that work can begin the blueprint must be completed - with 10 scenes already outlined, 3 days are necessary to complete the blueprint at a rate of 10 scenes per day.
Thus the outline will be completed on April 11th. The script will be completed on May 3rd, leaving 11 days for polishing and testing.
Simultaneous to this endeavor, the research for the non-fiction book will proceed. The target date for the commencement of writing will be May 20, by which the time the company will have had time to consume 6 books. Assuming an outlining phase that lasts until May 31, this leaves 6 months for writing. As the book will comprise 3 parts, this leaves 2 months to complete each part, with approximately 8 more consumed books to bolster each enterprise.
In the interim then, the work plan will be limited to reading, with care taken to choose the correct books for illuminating the thesis of the book. That is the job for tonight.
